Healing Past Hurts With EMDR

Past trauma or painful life experiences can feel stuck in the body and the mind and keep you from living the life you want to live.

I offer virtual Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy across NY as a way to help people heal painful experiences from their past and live a more present centered life.

What is EMDR?

EMDR is an evidence-based therapy used to help the brain process painful experiences from the past to reduce their emotional impact.

Think of your brain like a filing cabinet.  This filing cabinet holds the thoughts, emotions, body sensations, and experiences from your life.  Generally, our brain is able to process new information and file them where they need to go.

When something painful or traumatic happens, our brain can become overwhelmed and this information (memories, thoughts, emotions)  isn’t able to get stored properly.  Imagine the files being scattered on the floor.  These scattered files can lead to intrusive thoughts, nightmares, and patterns that are hard to break.

EMDR helps organize the files so that experiences from the past no longer feel like a threat to your day-to-day life.

What to Expect in Online EMDR Sessions

Research has shown the effectiveness of virtual EMDR.  All you need is a quiet space with a stable internet connection.

I will then walk you through the process, including something called bilateral stimulation, which can include visual tracking or physical tapping.  This is all something we would work through together as we start the process so you know what to expect.

How EMDR Helps You Heal

When your internal file system has been organized and experiences from the past processed, people often will see:

  • Decreased emotional reactivity to triggers.

  • Decreased physical reactivity to triggers.

  • Improved sleep as it relates to painful experiences from the past.

  • Breaking free from old and unhelpful negative beliefs about yourself.
